Phosphoric acid is mainly used in pharmaceutical, food, fertilizer and other industries, including as rust prevention agents, food additives, dental and orthopaedic surgery, EDIC caustics, electrolytes, flux, dispersants, industrial caustics, fertilizers as raw materials and components of household cleaning products. Also used as chemical agents, phosphates are nutrients for all life forms.

Phosphoric acid or orthophosphoric acid, with a molecular weight of 97.994, is a common inorganic acid. It is a medium strong acid. It is obtained by dissolving phosphorus pentoxide in hot water. Orthophosphoric acid is obtained commercially by treating apatite with sulfuric acid. Phosphoric acid dehydrates easily in air. Heat loses water to pyrophosphoric acid, and further loses water to metaphosphate.
